Famciclovir (By Mouth)

Famciclovir (fam-SYE-kloe-veer)

Treats herpes zoster (shingles).Belongs to a class of drugs called antivirals.

There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to famciclovir. Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to acyclovir (Zovirax®), valacyclovir, or ganciclovir.

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often.
  • Take this medicine exactly as your doctor ordered.
  • May be taken with or without food.

If a dose is missed:

  • Take your medicine as soon as you remember that you have missed your dose.
  • If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take your medicine and skip the missed dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Keep taking the medicine on schedule until the tablets are gone, or until your doctor tells you to stop.
  • Store at room temperature, away from heat, direct light, and moisture.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:


Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.


Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Check with your doctor before taking famciclovir if you have kidney disease or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Famciclovir may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Be careful when driving or operating machinery.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Rash or hives
  • Trouble breathing
  • Tightness in chest
  • Swelling in the face

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
