Urofollitropin (Injection)

Urofollitropin (yoor-oh-fol-li-TROE-pin)

Causes the ovaries to release eggs (ovulation) in women who have polycystic ovary disease or a hormone problem that keeps them from ovulating.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to urofollitropin or if you are pregnant. Urofollitropin should not be used if you have certain types of thyroid or adrenal gland disorder, a pituitary tumor, unusual bleeding that you do not know the cause of, an ovarian cyst, or infertility that is caused by medical problems other than polycystic ovary disease--check with your doctor.

How to Use This Medicine:

Injectable

• Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given.
• An IM shot is given in your muscle (upper arm, thigh, buttocks).
• It is best to have a nurse or doctor show you how to give yourself the shot. Sometimes a family member or friend can be taught to give your medicine. Make sure you understand how to give the medicine correctly.

If a dose is missed:

• This medicine needs to be given on a regular schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor for instructions.

How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

• Store this medicine in the refrigerator or at room temperature, away from heat and light.
• Any urofollitropin that has been prepared for injection (mixed in the syringe) should be used right away.
• Throw away any unused medicine.
• Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

• If you are breastfeeding, talk with your doctor before using this medicine.
• This medicine may cause more than one egg at a time to be released from the ovary, and there is a chance you may become pregnant with more than one baby (twins, triplets, etc.). Talk with your doctor about this risk before you start using urofollitropin.
• You need to work closely with your doctor and follow all instructions carefully for the best chance that this treatment will work.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

• Severe pelvic pain with nausea, vomiting, and weight gain
• Numbness or tingling in hands or feet

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating
• Pain, itching, or swelling where the shot is given
• Skin rash or itching
• Breast tenderness
• Headache
• Dry skin or hair loss

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
