What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?
Some people with G6PD deficiency have no symptoms at all. In others, the symptoms and signs can range from mild to severe, and may include:
newborn jaundice, an abnormal yellow color of the skin and eyes that is present at or shortly after birth
an enlarged spleen or liver
Hemolytic crisis is a group of symptoms that occur when many red blood cells suddenly die all at once. The symptoms that result include:
weakness
pain in the abdomen or back
jaundice
dark urine
fever and chills
severe fatigue
tachycardia, or a rapid heartbeat
low blood pressure
kidney failure, known as chronic renal failure
congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively throughout the body
shock
